On Bucket Lists
Bucket lists are common place. We all know what they are. A collection of all the things we want to do before the candle burns out.
I’ve found there to be three main problems with bucket lists. The first problem is that for most people, a majority of the tasks never get accomplished. We put off the things on the list for some future time that may never come and at the end of our lives we look at the list as more of a collection of things we regret having never done at all.
The second problem is that most of our lists are entirely too long and we could never actually accomplish everything on them. Life is finite and we won’t all be billionaire’s with six pack abs who do nothing but travel the world having amazing experiences and seeing all that life has to offer. Deep down we know this and instead of accomplishing what we can, we either get overwhelmed and never do any of them or we pretend we can do everything, inevitably fail, and instead of looking at all that we did do we just feel regret for what we didn’t.
The third and final problem is that bucket lists are based solely in the future. A future that is never guaranteed. I really do hope that I get to live to 110 so I can see three different centuries in my lifetime. Statistically though, it’s unlikely to happen. When my last day comes I don’t want to be thinking about the things I didn’t do, see, or experience. I want to be grateful for the time I was given, the people I shared that time with, and reflect with joy on the wonderful things I got to experience in the years that I had.
And so, I created the The Impossible List; an anti-bucket list of sorts. The impossible list is a two part list.
Part one is the inbox. A list of every crazy, ridiculous, outrageous, or otherwise thought to be impossible thing that I think might be fun. Think of all the times you’ve uttered phrases like “Wouldn’t it be awesome if…” “Could you imagine….” “What if…” “Someday it’d be awesome to…” You get the idea. Anything that slightly resembles one of these phrases goes on the list. See mine here.
The second part is what I’m really talking about when I say The Impossible List. Anytime you do one of the tasks from the inbox, it goes on your Impossible List. Adventures had and memories created, over the course of your life The Impossible List becomes a collection of all the things you did while there was still time remaining. A list of fulfillment, created with gratitude, by someone who did all they could with what they had.
That’s my hope for you. That you get to the end of your life and instead of a bucket list filled with regret, you look back on a list of all the things you did that in their own way each seemed impossible at some point in your life. So go out there. Face your fears. Seek discomfort. Dream big. And…
